Daren Dean is the author of seven books with the addition of The New Salvation (CJ Press) and Shelter Me (University of West Alabama Press) in 2025. Dean's previous books are Far Beyond the Pale, I'll Still Be Here Long After You're Gone, The Black Harvest: A Novel of the American Civil War, This Vale of Tears, and Roads. He graduated from Central Methodist University as an English Fellow. Later he earned his MFA in Creative Writing from the prestigious University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He has been featured in Bloom, Huffpost, Kirkus Reviews, and Ploughshares. "Affliction" was a Finalist in the Glimmer Train Short Fiction Contest for New Writers. Dean's short stories and poetry have appeared in Bull magazine, Cowboy Jamboree Magazine, Delta Poetry Review, Fiction Southeast, Green Hills Literary Lantern, Louisiana Literature, Maryland Literary Review, Midwestern Gothic, Oklahoma Review, Poetry Southeast, Revolution John, StorySouth, Yemassee, and others. The Black Harvest was recently nominated for the Pen/Faulkner, the WY Boyd Literary Award for Excellence in Military Fiction, the Midlands Author Award, and was shortlisted for the Missouri Authors Award. Independent Fiction Alliance named Roads as one of the Top 25 Indie books of 2023. He is a frequent presenter and reader/speaker at AWP Conference, Orr Street Studios' "Hearing Voices, Seeing Visions" series, colleges, libraries, county history museums, writer's clubs, Louisiana Book Festival, Missouri Folklore Society, Serendipity Gallery Reading Series, Currently, he is an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at Lincoln University of Missouri.
